The easiest way to explore local AI

Desktop app with a built-in model browser: search, download with one click and chat, no terminal needed. It runs models on llama.cpp or Apple’s MLX and serves an OpenAI-compatible local API. Apple Silicon only, macOS 14 or newer. Version 0.4.25 (19 September 2026) added the experimental Splash engine for Qwen 3.6-35B-A3B and Qwen3.8-27B on M3-or-newer Macs with macOS 26.4+ and at least 36 GB; the current release is 0.4.26 (13 October 2026), which can run alongside the Bionic agent app. MTP speculative decoding has been stable since 0.4.14.

The engine behind most local AI apps — MLX by default on Apple Silicon since v0.40

Lightweight tool that downloads and runs models with one command and serves a local API that many Mac apps use. v0.40.0 (25 September 2026) runs every model architecture its MLX engine supports on MLX by default on Apple Silicon, with llama.cpp for the rest; ollama ps shows which. The current release is v0.40.6 (16 October 2026). The MLX engine uses speculative decoding on models that ship a draft head, so its speeds are not always plain decode. Since v0.32, typing ollama on its own opens an agent launcher, and v0.35 added decision models such as Nimble that return choices and probabilities instead of text.

oMLX

Mac-native MLX server with an SSD KV cache and MTP

Open-source (Apache 2.0) MLX server with a native Swift menu-bar app. It keeps the KV cache in a hot RAM tier and a cold SSD tier, so long conversations and coding sessions reuse past context, even after a restart; serves several models with continuous batching; and speaks both the OpenAI and Anthropic APIs, which is why agent tools point at it. Its Lightning MTP speculative decoding is on by default for models that ship MTP heads (v0.7.1), so check that setting before comparing speeds. MacStories used oMLX for its M5 Ultra review.

Native Mac & iOS client for an Ollama server

SwiftUI app for Mac, iPhone and iPad that connects to Ollama running on your Mac and gives it a native chat window. Its developer now builds Jaz as the new iteration of the project, so Enchanted sees fewer updates, but it still works with an Ollama server.

Apple’s own AI framework, and the engine under Ollama 0.40

Apple’s open-source array framework for Apple silicon, running on the CPU and GPU over unified memory. Its mlx-lm package (pip install -U mlx-lm, Python 3.11+) generates, chats, converts and fine-tunes models from Hugging Face. On M5-family chips with macOS 26.2 or later, MLX also uses the GPU’s Neural Accelerators, which Apple measured cutting time to first token up to about 4x against an M4.

llama.cpp

The foundational LLM inference engine

The C/C++ inference engine behind many local AI tools and the home of the GGUF format. Metal is on by default on Apple Silicon; install it with brew install llama.cpp or build it from source. It gives full control over quantization, context length, batching and speculative decoding, and new architectures often land here first.

Ollama alternatives on Mac

Ollama is the easiest local server, but not the only one. If you want a different trade-off:

Already on Ollama? The Ollama on MLX guide shows which engine it uses for each model, and the Ollama errors guide fixes the common messages.

LM Studio alternatives on Mac

LM Studio is the most polished all-in-one app. Alternatives, depending on what you need:

Not for Mac: LMDeploy appears on some lists of local LLM servers, but it targets NVIDIA CUDA (and Huawei Ascend) GPUs and its README documents no macOS or Metal support, so it is not listed here.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best free app to run AI locally on Mac?

For most people, LM Studio (a visual app with one-click model downloads and a built-in chat) or Ollama (a light command-line tool with a local API that other apps use). Both are free, need no account and run on every Apple Silicon Mac. LM Studio does not run on Intel Macs; Ollama does, on the CPU only.

Can I use Ollama and LM Studio at the same time on Mac?

Yes. They are separate apps with separate model folders, so both can run at once. Each keeps its own copy of a model, which doubles disk use, and every loaded model takes unified memory, so unload what you are not using (ollama stop in Ollama, eject in LM Studio).

Do I need an internet connection to run local AI on Mac?

Only to download models. After that, inference runs entirely on your Mac. Ollama also offers optional cloud models; set OLLAMA_NO_CLOUD=1 to switch them off and keep everything local.

Which local AI app is fastest on Apple Silicon?

The engine matters less than the Mac. Since Ollama v0.40.0 (25 September 2026), Ollama runs supported models on Apple’s MLX by default, the engine LM Studio and mlx-lm also offer. Against llama.cpp, one published M4 Max test (4-bit) had mlx-lm 19% faster on Qwen3-30B-A3B (107.4 vs 89.9 tok/s), 4% faster on Qwen3-8B and 14% slower on Gemma 3 4B.

What is MLX, and does Ollama use it?

MLX is Apple’s open-source array framework for Apple silicon. It runs on the CPU and GPU over unified memory, and on M5-family chips with macOS 26.2 or later it also uses the GPU’s Neural Accelerators to speed up prompt processing. Ollama 0.40 and later run every model its MLX runtime supports on MLX by default, with llama.cpp for the rest.

Does LM Studio run on Intel Macs?

No. LM Studio’s system requirements list Apple Silicon (M-series) Macs with macOS 14 or newer and say Intel-based Macs are not supported. On an Intel Mac, use Ollama or llama.cpp, which run on the CPU.
